The elevation at this point is about 9600 ft. The height of Mt Columbia is 12,293 ft. Tree Skiing at Chatter Creek. When the weather closes in and a storm is delivering the next 20 to 30 cm of light powder snow, cat skiers head for the trees where the snow is lightest and most consistent and the visibility is best. Chatter Creek offers a great variety of tree skiing on East Ridge, Lodge Ridge and Megahooped,as well as in Staff Trees, the Bermuda Triangle, SX3 and SX2, to name just a few tree skiing areas.

In the distance, the trees of the Bermuda Triangle are apparent on the eastern slope of the Kitchen Range of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Above the trees, the Clamshell can be seen on the right, the Table in the center and parts of MCO on the left. To the left of the Table, and just left of center, RUZM bowl faces us, in shadow. Just right of RUZM, the sun glints off the slope of South Park, on the south side of the large peak in the center of the photo. Cat skiing terrain in the high alpine of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. A network of cat roads are visible. Many are pick-up roads for collecting skiers and riders coming off the neighboring slopes. Other roads climb to the crests of the ridges. At the end of the day, the ski-out will take those with "the legs" to the bottom of the far valley and the comfort of the remote ski lodge. Others may chose to ride home. It will have been a long day of powder skiing and the ski home is long and challenging.

A ski guide checks out a new slope. The snowcat has taken us to the crest of a high ridge in search of unskied powder snow. This slope has not been skied since the last snowfall. Our run will drop about 2000 ft to the bottom of the valley. The slopes left of center in the background, as well as the far peak are also within the cat skiing tenure. We were skiing the powder up there yesterday, at an elevation as high as 9600 ft. The views were spectacular.

A snowcat overlooks many kilometers of untracked powder skiing terrain. Tomorrow, this snowcat may take its group of snow cat skiers to the very top of the mountain in the far distance, or to the large glacier that lies beyond the far horizon. Snowcat skiers literally have 100's of sq. km to play in. One BC snowcat operator has over 90 square miles of terrain.
